How to build a storage shed- choosing lumber
Before you learn how to build a storage shed, you have to choose the material you want it to be made out of. If
wood is your material of choice, you'll also have to choose the type of lumber. The types of lumber to avoid are
unseasoned, and green wood. The reason for this is because when dry, it can easily split and shrink. A popular
choice for framing storage sheds, are kiln dried lumber. Kiln dried lumber isn't as heavy as green wood and
unseasoned, and won't crack as easily. The grades of lumber most often used are 1,2,3 and 4. I recommend you use
grade 2 lumber for the foundation of your storage shed. Grade 4 tends to crack really easily, and has a lot of
weak spots.
When using wood, it is important to know how to build a storage shed floor properly. Make sure you use foor
joists and plywood that are treated chemically. I recommend that you use Alkaline Copper
Quaternary (ACQ) treated because it is rot resistant, and you won't have a problem with wood destroying insects.
Chemically treated plywood is excellent to use for the floor foundation because it will not harm the wood if you
store wet, or snow covered equipment in your storage shed.
